Top of the World

Read Time3 Minute, 46 Second

No, this is not another journal entry about me walking on the CN Tower Edge Walk, although I still dream about doing it again.  I chose the title because it is the song that I was listening to when I got up this morning.

Holly and I got up at 3:30 am and I wanted to go back to bed but decided to watch a couple of programs that I’d taped last night.

After watching The Curse of Oak Island season finale, I watched a couple of episodes of Stranger on Netflix.  I had been watching Ricky Gervais’s ‘After Life’ series but found I can only watch one episode a day – because it’s so sad.  It is also very funny but you’ll have to be the judge.

I made a second cup of coffee and fed Holly her breakfast.  And then I turned on my laptop to check my emails.  I had the usual number of messages but one, in particular, caught my immediate attention.

It was from Bill Hawke, a name I didn’t recognize.  But I can’t begin to tell you how excited I became just reading his letter.

Bill wrote that he and his wife Gail, had been tracing his family’s roots and although he wasn’t from the St. Andrews clan – he is from my dad’s mother’s side (the Law clan).

Apparently, he and Gail had been doing the genealogy for the past thirty years and had uncovered family history dating back to the 1600s.  He mentioned that they didn’t have surname information for many of the people on our respective family trees that cover the past seventy years.

Bottom line:  we’re cousins!  Not only that, but he lives in Vancouver!

I was so excited, I immediately wrote him a reply.

And as I’m writing this, my computer just beeped letting me know I had a new email message – and it’s a reply from him!

I’ll have to continue this post later.  We’ve agreed to compare notes and connect via a video conference in the near future.

Meanwhile, I’ve contacted my cousin Donna, to tell her about Bill and Gail.  Donna and I are both on Ancestry, but she is much more knowledgeable about our family’s tree than I am.

It will be interesting to learn more about the Law side of the family.  I know that they originally immigrated from Ireland but that’s about all I remember.

My dad seldom spoke about his relatives but I have always wanted to learn more about my grandparents and ancestors.

Dedicated to Bill and Gail Hawke

I hope that my stories are a gift to your head and heart.

Stay safe. Be well.  Laugh often.

Hugs,

Danny

Top of the World – lyrics

Such a feeling’s comin’ over me
There is wonder in ‘most everything I see
Not a cloud in the sky got the sun in my eyes
And I won’t be surprised if it’s a dream

Everything I want the world to be
Is now comin’ true especially for me
And the reason is clear, it’s because you are here
You’re the nearest thing to heaven that I’ve seen

I’m on the top of the world lookin’ down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I’ve found ever since you’ve been around
Your love’s put me at the top of the world

Somethin’ in the wind has learned my name
And it’s tellin’ me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There’s a pleasin’ sense of happiness for me

There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That tomorrow will be just the same for you and me
All I need will be mine if you are here

I’m on the top of the world lookin’ down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I’ve found ever since you’ve been around
Your love’s put me at the top of the world

I’m on the top of the world lookin’ down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I’ve found ever since you’ve been around
Your love’s put me at the top of the world

  1. Wow that’s so cool Danny. So happy to hear that a new family member has entered your world. I miss my nouns: people, places & things and I’m praying this virus dies!

    Stay safe🤗

    1. Yes, Sue, it was definitely at the top of the ‘cool’ scale. I learned quite a bit about my dad’s mom’s side of the family that I never knew. One day, I hope to meet Bill and his wife – if and when the social distancing and self-isolation period ends. I’m also looking forward to seeing you, again. Stay safe and be well, my north shore diva!
      Hugs,
      Danny
