Dear Marie

Machiko and I had just left the Pinnacle Hotel in North Vancouver after meeting for coffee and were walking down 1st Avenue, when suddenly, a woman came up to us and said:

Daniel?

She was wearing a mask, so I was not sure if I knew who she was.

Yes, it is – but I am sorry, I do not think…

Oh, my name is Marie. I recognized your voice as you were walking by me.  So, I had to stop you to see if it was you!

I tried taking a closer look at her, thinking that she may be a member of my walking club.  I know some of the newer members by their first names only.

I sent you an email last week.  I read your story and almost died, laughing so hard!  I sent you an email about it – it was from Marie.

I was both shocked and thrilled at the same time.  But I was at a loss for words – which for me is almost impossible.

I almost talked Machiko’s ears off, and now, here I was tongue-tied – at a complete loss of words.

I reached into my pocket and gave Marie one of my business cards.

I thanked her for reading my stuff, and we said our goodbyes.

I was embarrassed that I could not remember Marie’s email – but I get a lot of emails, and I enjoy reading them and try to reply to them all, but many of the emails are from friends and friends of friends, from my walking clubs.

And during my drive back to my home in White Rock, I wondered what Marie had written – and what I wrote in my reply to her.

I also thought about a childhood friend whose name was Marie Pollard.

She and her brother Mike lived next door to us when I was very young.

Marie was the same age as one of my older sisters, and they were friends.

But they moved to another area, and I only saw Marie when we were in high school.

She and I used to pass each other at school or the mall, and we always said hello to each other.

Marie was a lovely person, but I haven’t seen her since school – fifty-some years ago.

Maybe, I’ll check Facebook to see if she is listed there.  But she’s probably married and goes by her married name.

I also remember another girl named Marie – and I once wrote about her in my Flashback to the ’60s; Loblaws and The House of the Rising Sun.

She was the first girl I ever danced with – at a school dance at OCVI in 1963.

Anyway, I have never had a stranger stop me in the street before.

So, in the chance that Marie in North Van is reading this blog post, I want to ask her to please forward or resend the email to me.

I checked my email but can’t seem to find anything in the inbox or sent file folders.

And Marie, thank you for stopping me – I really appreciated your kind words and hope you get a chance to read more of my stuff.

Not all of my stories are funny, but if you found my UFOs, UAPs, and Heat story funny, maybe you will like a story I wrote in 2012 – Terror on 8th Avenue.

Or here is the link to another funny story about my dog Holly:  Man’s Best Friend

Dedicated to Marie in North Van

I hope my stories are a gift to your head and heart.

Hugs,

In My Life – lyrics

There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life, I love you more

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life, I love you more

In my life, I love you more
